Personality: Matt's only here because he was asked to be here. He was ranked third in the Whammy house, just behind Near and Mello. This was an orphanage made to bring up the next L, so to be ranked that high meant you were smart. While Mello and Near had a rivalry, Mello and Matt had a friendship of sorts. It's not clear how long/if they lost contact with each other or not between the time Mello left the Whammy house and he contacted Matt up to help him, but the fact is he did contact him and Matt is loyal enough to him as a friend to come along on a hunt for a guy who can kill people with just their face and name without too much complaining.

Roleplay Sample: [Waking up in a hospital bed was actually more of a pleasant surprise for Matt than it likely was for the other arrivals. Considering his last memory was getting a bunch of bullets emptied into him, yeah, he'll take it.
Sitting up, the first thing he does is look around the room. Right now it's empty, and there aren't any handcuffs on him. He's just going to waltz on out while he has the chance.
The town outside sure is something. Old looking, and far from the modern day cities of Japan.] Something tells me I'm not in Japan anymore...
[That was the understatement of the century. He doesn't really want to do it, but he'll have to ask someone where he is.] Hey, uh... Hate to bug you, but can you tell me where I am?
[The 'person' turns, revealing a faceful of fangs and scales. Matt pulls his hand back, lifting them both up in surrender.] Whoa, nevermind. That's cool, just keep walking. [He's just going to speed walk himself away, back into the space between two buildings where he can finally let out the breath he'd been holding.]
Shit... Maybe this is just some weird dying hallucination. [How could get shot that many times and live? The bullet wounds are even gone... This is too weird. It's like a videogame.]
